African American

• The Universal Black Pages -- If it's possible to be completely non--political in this day and age (or at least, not consciously political), this site achieves it. It was thoroughly mainstream. The only thing linking the items in the site together was that they were for, by, or about black people. If that's what you're looking for, you might have interest in this site. The site didn't live up to its promised scope, however -- the only listing under health was for Ashley's hair and scalp products -- but I was intrigued to discover a link to GUPPIES (black urban professionals) on--line. There is also a slim calendar of events throughout the U.S. The most interesting array of information was under What's New. This site was created and maintained by Georgia Tech black graduate students.

• The Black World Today -- An excellent source of news, with lots of original content. The publication raises issues that are not touched in the mainstream media: a recent article took President Clinton to task for his lack of interest in Africa. We like it so much, that it's also featured in our Publications menu area.

 

Arab-American

• Foundation for Middle East Peace (FMEP) - A nonprofit organization dedicated to informing Americans about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and assisting in a peaceful solution that brings security for both peoples

 

Asian-American

• South Asian Women’s Network -- Lots of information about women from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. A good feature is the Who's Who, with short biographies of prominent South Asian women; both historic and contemporary figures.

 

European-American

Unfortunately, most of what's on the Web about white people are the sites of various hate groups. While it's worth checking out what the enemy is up to, that's not what we want to do here. And right now, the Web reflects mainstream American society, it's assumed that "the mainstream" means white middle-class. What we will be looking for is sites where white people come to grips with the racism whites created in that larger culture and what can be done to help change that.

To start with, here are some personal reflections on the issue of race, ethnicity and identity by a man with Irish, French and German roots, who grew up in Queens. The site is One World, One People and there are also links to other Anti-Racist and Multicultural sites.

 

Latino

• Latino Links -- Links to sites about religion, entertainment, politics, international news and arts.

 

Native American

• Center For World Indigenous Studies -- A very informative site for a center that doing important work. The non-profit center conducts original research, education and holds conferences to help indigenous nations in working with governments around the world. The center conducts projects to promote the role of indigenous nations in formulating international law as well as a traditional medicine project, for example. In addition, the center started the Fourth World Documentation Project to create an archive of documents of the struggles of Indigenous Peoples to assert their rights as sovereign nations.

• Native Watch - is a web site that monitors current events within indigenous communities.

 

Anti-Racism

• Colours of Resistance -- Colours of Resistance (COR) is a grassroots network of people who actively work to develop multiracial, anti-racist politics in the movement against global
  capitalism.

• Anti-Racist Action -- Anti-Racist Action is a national movement that fights attacks on gays, racism, fascism, hate groups and sexism. There are several chapters in the United States and Canada. This is the homepage of the Columbus, Ohio chapter, which also prints a bi-monthly newsletter, the ARA News.

 

Publications

• In Motion Magazine -- It’s mission is to promote grassroots organizing for social change among communities of color and working people. Comprehensive and well-designed. This magazine covers the defense of affirmative action, the struggles of indigenous Hawaiians to regain control of their native land, writing from students involved in the Nigeria democracy movement, and small Midwestern farmers fighting agricultural combines, among many other topics. The site is also in Spanish.
