Why has the Justice
Nanavati Commission Report exonerated the murderers of Gujarat, when every
independent fact-finding report — both Indian and international — directly
accused the administration and Gujarat government for not mere complicity in the
pogrom, but direct participation. In its preliminary findings the ‘Justice’ said
" the evidence recorded so far do not show any serious lapse on the part of
the police and the civil administration". Nothing could be as unjust as such
a biased report.
But why the big cover
up? The main reason is not just a face-saving for the BJP, but that big money is
involved behind the entire administration and local government. It is the money
of Reliance, where the Ambani family has massive stakes in the state. It is a
quid-pro-quo between Modi and Ambani.
Consider this:
Ambani’s net profits (i.e. after tax) for the year 2002-03, amounting to a
gigantic Rs.4,104 crores, was 30% of the entire Indian private sector profits
put together. Of this profit, a huge 35% was an outright gift from the Gujarat
government to the Ambanis. In this year the ‘sales tax incentive’ given by the
Gujarat government amounted to an unbelievable Rs1,190. In the previous year,
2001-02, it was Rs.960 crores.
With such gigantic
sums being doled out to the Ambanis by the Gujarat Government, it is quite
natural that the Ambanis will have the entire administration, including Justice
Nanavati, in their pocket. With a mere 2% of this gift being returned in bribes
— i.e. Rs. 24 crores — Ambani can purchase tens of Modis. While the Gujarat
government hardly spent anything on the devastating earthquake and droughts that
hit the state, in just these two years it has gifted a phenomenal Rs.2,000
crores to the Ambanis. With a total income of about Rs.20,000 crores, it means
the Gujarat government gifts roughly 5% of its income to the Ambanis.
Obviously the nexus
between a section of very big business and the fanatical edge of the Hindu
fascists is deep. No wonder the butcher Modi is granted much respectability in
elite circles. Exactly how much funds the Ambanis put into the Modi electoral
victory will, of course, never see the light of day.
