PGA Offensive in Central India

Celebrating the first anniversary of the formation of the PGA, the PW launched a series of attacks on targets in AP and Orissa. Dec.2, 2001was also the second anniversary of the martyrdom of the three PW Central Committee members, Comrades Shyam, Mahesh and Murali. It was called an anti-repression week stretching from Nov.30 to Dec.7.

On the night of Sept.30 there were a series of synchronized attacks in Medak and Chittoor districts on properties of the comprador bourgeoisie. A granite factory in Medak district, owned by Union Minister of State for Defence, Krishnam Raju, was blown up resulting in damages estimated at Rs.2 crores. The Indupriyal and Narsapur squads, assisted by local militia, conducted this action. Another squad blasted the Tata Coffee factory, also in Medak district resulting in damages of about Rs.5 crores. They also snatched a pistol from retired Air Chief Marshal, Dennis La Fontaine. The chilling plant of a milk factory, belonging to CM Chandrababu Naidu, was also blown up, resulting in damages worth Rs.15 lakhs.

On the next day, PGA guerrillas blasted the court buildings in the Asifabad town of Adilabad district. Also a Congress leader was shot dead in Medak district. Also it was reported that a constable was killed in the Basagudda area of the DK guerrilla zone.

On the third successive day of violence, there were a series of attacks in AP and Orissa. Around 25 PGA guerrillas, including members of the militia, attacked the house of a senior BJP leader in Malkangiri district of Orissa. Arbinda Dani is also the minister for Co-operation, Handlooms and Textiles. The guerrillas asked the three relatives present to come out of the house, helped remove the grains and other necessities, and then blasted the house to pieces. Earlier, the same PGA unit had blasted a police outpost, after the three policemen present surrendered. Across the border, in the districts of Vishakapatnam and East Godavari, simultaneous attacks were launched on three police stations. In each attack there were about 40 to 50 guerrillas, including members of the militia. After hour-long gun battles, the guerrillas retreated without any losses. Two houses of the TDP MLA, Satyanarana, in Vishakapatnam and East Godavari districts were blown up. Also a contractor was shot dead in Medak district. A guesthouse and office of the Andhra Paper Mill was also blasted, resulting in damage of about Rs.10 lakhs.

Panic stricken with these new rounds of attacks the chief minister called an urgent meeting of IAS and IPS officers. A red alert was sent out to all politicians to take precautions in their movements. Heads of business — the CII AP representative — demanded increased protection for industry, fearing that TNCs would cease investing in AP if they faced such threats.

On December 4, bomb blasts destroyed the Mandal Revenue Office in Adilabad district; a TDP leader’s house in Chitial Mandal, and the building of a orchard company in Vizanagaram district. Some of these action were conducted by the local militia.
