Palamuru’s Son Ramanna always stood for the People

[Life sketch of Mahesh (Sambasivudu) who became a martyr in an accident]

Palamur is synonymous with famine and abject poverty. It gives a living picture how lakhs of people go for migration to far off distances to eke out a subsistence living. Only the New democratic revolution can liberate the people of Palamur along with the rest of India, from exploitation and famine. Sambasivudu stood for that cause and died for the same.

Sambasivudu was born in a poor dalit family in Kolhapur tehsil. The cruel exploitation he saw from his childhood days, brought him closer to the movement. While studying in high school, he joined the RSU and led many struggles. He went to attend classes conducted in the Nallamala forest. During the classes Com. Sudersan Reddy (Kiran) became a martyr when he accidentally drowned in a tank. From then he decided to become a Professional Revolutionary. Since 1989 he worked as an Organiser and rallied rice mill workers, ‘hamalies’, and women in Mahaboob Nagar town. From then he became Prabhakar and Prabhakar made an indelible imprint on the people. When repression was intensified, he joined the Panagal squad in 1990-91 and guided the town movement. From 1992 to 94 he was commander of various squads. In 1995 district conference he became a member of the district committee.

He stood rock like during many ups and down of the movement. In 1991-2 within three months, more than ten activists of the mass organistaions were killed by the police. As a result of the attacks on the squads, commanders and squad members became martyrs. Repression came in an intensified form in 1997-2001. Prabhakar led several miltary actions and put a brake to the enemy’s advance. They brought repression on their family members. They put his wife and child against the party and demolished the martyrs column and made malicious propaganda against Ramanna. Though he was away from his wife and child he stood resolutely for the people’s interest only. In the September 2000 district plenum while making self criticism for his mistakes, he withdrew from district secretaryship and continued as a DCM. His accidental death is a serious loss to the movement.
