Gothenburg—A War Zone

Yet again the demonstrators fiercely attacked the EU Summit and EU/Bush Conclave at Gothenburg, Sweden, in mid June. On this occasion the violence turned even more aggressive.

On the very first day 25,000 protestors clashed with police and over 450 people were arrested. The local police declared the conference center area unsafe. An elaborate restaurant dinner planned for government leaders was abruptly cancelled for "security reasons".

In Gothenburg the police fought pitched battles against thousands of angry demonstrators who, denouncing Bush’s position on everything from capital punishment and the environment to globalisation and strategic defence, went on a rampage attacking what they described as "symbols of the capitalist economy". In the firing that ensued three protestors were shot and wounded and 12 policemen were injured. The center of the port city of Gothenburg looked like a war zone with wrecked shops and streets strewn with rocks and smouldering barricades.

Earlier, Bush arrived in Spain amidst violent protests against his policies when thousands marched to Madrid center.

With each imperialist gathering, people’s protests are getting more and more violent. They are unable to escape people’s wrath, wherever they meet, in any corner of the world.
