Com. Ramesh (Satyanarayana), an Exemplary Revolutionary Warrior

[This report of Com. Ramesh, who was killed in Darakonda raid, along with Com. Naveen (see last issue) was received by the People’s March office in April, 2000]

A decade ago, in 1990, when the peasant movement throughout AP was raging, Com. Satyanarayana (alias Ramesh, Sridhar) was inspired and attracted to revolutionary politics. He was born in a district (Karimnagar) that is fertile soil for revolution and has given vast revolutionary movements. He was the beloved son of a landless poor peasant family that had migrated to the coal fields for a living. In his early youth, he viewed education as a solution for their slave-like existence, and came to Hyderabad. The impact of the revolutionary movement in his village together with his contacts with the party in the city motivated Com. Satyanarayana to work as a full timer.

Fired with revolutionary scientific ideals, he began his new life on the path of liberation of the oppressed masses.... and advanced steadfastly till his last breath. While he worked as a courier of the Regional Committee (the leading committee of the South Telangana movement), he effectively and efficiently coordinated party contacts, inspite of close observation by the enemy. He was arrested in February 1993 when the state-level party mechanism fell into the clutches of the enemy. Even during his three year sojourn in jail, he stood firm against the enemy, and was in the forefront of many a heroic struggle against the atrocities of the jail authorities. Mocking at the enemy’s repressive measures, he spread a fighting spirit and self-confidence amongst fellow prisoners. Besides, Com. Ramesh’s creativity and initiative was not curbed in jail. He proved that even with one’s hands chained, the pen of a people’s poet will not stop writing ... the revolutionary spirit will echo even in the enemy’s custody. It was here that he wrote and edited the magazine of poems entitled "The Voice of the Shackled Poet" (Bandee Kavi Gontuka).

After coming out of jail he marched straight back into the lives of the people. He witnessed the ongoing movement in South Telangana and simultaneously shared his jail experiences. It was during this period that he creatively tried to develop revolutionary literature.

In January 1997, responding to the party’s call, he left for the Eastern Ghats. Within a short period of time he won the affection of the tribals, and worked hard to unite them. He ably performed his responsibility to encourage the youth to run the GRDs — the primary form of people’s militia — and became party to building the people’s alternative administrative organs. He acknowledged the importance of retaliation against the oppressive attacks of the state, which sought to prevent the growth of people’s power to a higher level. With glowing class hatred, he stood in the forefront to eliminate the enemy in the Mandapalli and Kotampalem ambushes. He effectively provided protection for the retreat squads in several encounters, by courageously fighting the special police. He displayed enthusiastic initiative in the raid on the Bodigadda (Orissa) police camp, that gave a big haul of weapons. He played a most constructive role in the party in taking the movement in this Agency area from the preparatory stage to the primary stage of guerilla zone. Com. Ramesh, effectively gained the confidence of the masses, people’s militia and squad members as a SAC member and a deputy commander of the Tandava Squad. In October ’99 he was given responsibility as a deputy commander of a Special Guerilla Squad, which was specifically formed for retaliation to eradicate the enemy’s offensive.

In this process, our three Central Committee members were brutally killed, because of a betrayal. To contain the enemy’s offensive, and to retaliate against these brutal murders, the party took the decision for the people’s guerilla forces to launch severe blows on the enemy, as part of a revolutionary campaign of retaliation. The attack on Darakonda police camp, in which Com. Ramesh laid down his life, was a part of this decision.

From the time of reconaissance, to the seizure of ammunition, to the elimination of the enemy, Com. Ramesh played an active role in the raid on the Darakonda APSP camp. He courageously attacked the sentry bunker and with lightening speed killed the sentry. He finished off another policeman to take control of the camp. At the call of the commander, he rushed into the camp for the seizure of weapons and was hit by bullets from a frightened police force. The courageous initiative of these people’s hero’s made this raid a big success.

In the process, our beloved people’s warriors, Comrades Naveen (Balakrishna) and Satyanarayana (Ramesh, Sridhar) laid down their valuable lives for freeing Mother Earth. With an exemplary spirit of sacrifice they diplayed great courage, determination, initiative and bravery. Let the warring youth, people’s militia, guerilla forces adopt these people’s heroes’ ideals and practice as their own. Let us pledge to continue the campaign of retaliation for the complete destruction of the ruling class governments ... and thereby fulfil the dreams of our great martyrs.
