Kashmir:

Operation Sarp Vinash or Damp Squib?

Malkit

Cross border ‘terrorism’ (cbt) has been the single most agenda screamed by the GOI day in and day out at home and abroad. Especially after September 11, the NDA government has increased its decibel levels when it joined the "International Coalition against terrorism". For the Kashmiri people, who are fighting a bloody war against India, cross border ‘terrorism’ has no meaning. Borders are drawn on the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination by India as well as Pakistan. State terrorism has reached such heights, that the GOI speaking of terrorism is like devils chanting vedas!

The US war on Afghanistan was a blessing for India to push its anti ‘cbt’ game to greater heights. Large numbers of troops were employed and a confrontation like situation emerged. But for the pressure of the US, which needed Pakistan at that crucial juncture, things would have deteriorated.

During the US war on Iraq, clandestine talks, phone conversations, behind the curtain meetings were going on between India and the US at the political and military levels. High-level joint army, navy and Airforce exercises have been underway or are on the anvil. The US is willing to sympathise with the GOI for its inability to extend open support to its aggression on Iraq. At the same time the Sangh Parivar, as well as Defence higher-ups, were in a frenzy for pre-emptive-attacks on Pakistan, following the footsteps of the ‘International Loh Purush’.

The US may dump Musharaff at some time, but is not ready to dump Pakistan as a whole as it still needs it, especially, in ‘stabilising’ Afghanistan. At US behest the war cries of "pre-emptive strikes" have come down and now there is much talk of cooperation.

After Iraq’s occupation, the US has time to ‘dwell’ on Indo-Pak tensions. Despite the NDA’s repeated rhetoric that Indian does not need third party (i.e. US) intervention; it is the US and US alone that is intervening between Indian and Pakistan and has put the agenda of ‘talks’ before them. Both bowed to US pressure and now another phase of the talks process has started.

The BJP needs a war frenzy, anti-Pak bashing, anti-cbt hysteria, etc, to churn out votes. The Kargil war was utilised to encash votes. In view of the coming elections in some states India’s tough stand on cbt could be helpful. Also India wants to impress upon the US that cbt is continuing despite Musharraf’s assurances.

That was why the Indian Army did the hoax of Operation Sarp Vinash.

Truth behind the propaganda blitz

Operation Sarp-Vinash (OSV) was described as one of the most high profile counter terrorist operations in the history of the Indian Army – the Army claimed that it busted a big area, which has been used as one of the ‘mobile training camps’ by the ‘foreign terrorists’. The number of terrorists, described, was quite fluid. The Indian Army spokesperson claimed that they had been doing this operation clandestinely since January 2003. They had built up helipods, Kacha roads, what not!

The nature of the operation, if one believes them, was a stupendous one:"Indian Army’s Northern command has conducted a complex terrorist camp-busting called Sarp Vinash with remarkable skill and precession, easily one of the land marks…". It was a division-size operation involving 7 battalion and two brigade headquarters, spear-headed by 9 para special forces, six other units of the 163 infantry brigade.

What was the booty?

"60 catches and hideouts were busted. 20 AK 47 rifles, 5 Pika guns, 2 snifer-rifle, communication equipment including satphone, rations worth of 7000 tonnes. Overall 60 terrorists have been killed." To get widest coverage, the media was flown there, to be fed the concocted stories. Not a single media reporter, except the FRONTLINE correspondent went and verified the truth. Some of the correspondents wrote as if they were on the scene.

The massive hoax was busted by Pravin Swami of the Frontline by making an indepth investigation. Pravin Swami who writes regularly on Kashmir, and has no iota of inclination towards the Kashmiri people’s struggle, exposed the colossal fraud presented by Indian Army officials.

It was always the case of the GOI that all training camps were supposed to be situated on the Pakistan side. This is the first time that the Indian Army found a ‘mobile training camp’ on the Indian side. When Indian Army filed an FIR (on the number of killed) to the JK police – as is mandatory – the number of killed from April 22nd (when the operation started) till June 7th was 46. Then how come the number was given as 60?

Regarding the capture of weapons, the Army claimed the total number to be only 33. How could 60 ‘terrorists’ be chased and killed with helicopter gunships, and yet could not take the deceased one’s weapons? To impress upon the public that it was a big ‘mobile terrorist camp’ the Army claimed that they seized 7000 tonnes of rations! But the Army showed only 355 kg of rations! The story is full of loopholes! The Indian Army wants to create this fake war with a conscious plan. That was why the local gujjar population was not allowed since April to these hills, who traditionally take goats there for grazing. The Indian Army did not want to have any witnesses to its war, which was hyped up in a big way..

Operation Sarp Vinash may be a big fraud. But more than 5 lakh army and para-military personnel are fighting a real war with Kashmir’s teeming millions to crush their genuine fight to self-determination. Tyrants may have the day now, but the future belongs to the people.
