Central Asia and US Imperialism’s New War

— Arjun

The September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington have shaken the myth of American impregnability. When attacks come from within no NMD shield can be useful. The vast network of FBI, the Army and police forces, the CIA and the State Department, and the villainous heart of the mighty American death machine—the Pentagon, stood bewildered. The targets were the Pentagon, in Washington, and the nerve center of "mighty" US finance capital — the twin towers of the World Trade Center, in New York. These symbols of American might and terror went up in flames and crumbled like a house of cards, when hijacked planes crashed into them on the morning of that Tuesday.

The limited and precise attacks, having the capacity to devastate the intended targets, were made by the forces inimical to the US. The number one power in the world is also the number one enemy of the world people. So, it invites the wrath of those it intends to destroy. The country that hitherto has been used to raining death and destruction on other countries and nations and has never fought a war on its own soil, nor ever suffered a direct attack of significant proportions, has come under this surprise blow.

The September 11, 2001 attacks were not the commencement of a war against America. These were the terrorist acts of people who wanted to take revenge on the US for its horrendous policies. The victims in New York join the millions of direct and indirect victims of the policies and actions of the US ruling classes. This attack was nothing but a backlash against those policies, leading to the loss of many an innocent life. The US rulers, who are always ready to seek pretexts to attack the people and nations world wide, have found this opportunity handy to take revenge on the poor Muslim people of Afghanistan. In the name of defending the lives of the Americans and the defence of "democracy and freedom" of the "civilized world" the US rulers fanned a chauvinistic hysteria by declaring that these attacks were a War on America. The US masters equated the suicide plane dashing into the twin towers and a part of the Pentagon offices with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour during the Second World War in December 1941. The comparison itself is hideous.

Then Osama and the Taliban have long been US friends. Amidst the superpower rivalry of that time, the US propped up the Islamic liberation fighters of Afghanistan in the 1980s, after the Soviet imperialist aggression on that country. The US, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan encouraged fundamentalism in Afghanistan in the eighties and sought to corrupt the liberation struggle of the Afghanis. Now the US wants an "end" to "fundamentalist terrorism" and has declared an all out war. It has even secured the support of ex-rival Russia to exterminate its ex-friends. But the US doesn’t like to be reminded of its misdeeds of the past. It is now committing new crimes and would again want not to be reminded of these in future.

The NATO, repeating the US argument that it has become a victim of aggression, decided to take this aggression as an aggression on all the countries of the alliance. It is an irony that throughout its existence and in times of intense rivalry with the Warsaw pact countries this clause has never been invoked. Now in the "declared" times that the era of Cold War is over and an era of permanent peace and progress has been ushered in, this clause was invoked to fight a war against certain individuals, and to defend the mightiest power on earth!

Very few countries of the world condemned the US move to launch a war of aggression against one of the poorest countries of the world. Afghanistan has no air power, no sea power, no tanks, no Howitzer guns, no atomic or germ bombs. They have only a little fraction of the ammunition the US has. There is literally no comparison between the firepower of the two countries.

Yet the US is so fearful that it has asked for everyone’s support in its war against Afghanistan. It is bringing in its most sophisticated arsenal to confront a poor and most backward country. Herein lies the moral defeat of the US armed power. The only asset of the Afghanis is their hilly land, and their strong resolve to defend their sovereignty, that may prove a big graveyard for the soldiers of the mightiest power of the world, if land armies of the US are involved in a prolonged fight.

In reality it is not a war against "terrorism" but is a different war in the name of terrorism. It goes far beyond the clamour about terrorism. It is a war to completely control the Middle East and open another corridor to oil rich Central Asia.

It implies a threat to the interests of Russia and also China in Central Asia and an effort to pre-empt the growing ties of France and Europe with the Middle East. That is why all these concerned countries have reservations and are skeptical about the impending US war. Their problem is they are unable to confront the US at this point of time. Due to the docile response of the European Powers and Russia to the build up of the US invasion, most of the countries of the Central Asian region went staggering before the US one after the other.

It is like an Ashavmedh Yagya or the Juggernaut against the governments who do not abide by all of its diktats and have qualms about its hegemony and supremacy, or, are not its servile governing bodies in their respective lands. The US imperialist master wants them to be accountable to only itself.

When the Russians had invaded Afghanistan almost two third of the world (except the Russian client states and India) had condemned it. Now, after two decades, the US invades the same country. There are few countries who condemn it.

Jingoist and Bellicose America

Bush has declared that the US wanted to eliminate the whole system of terrorism and the governments sponsoring them. He declared a sustained and an all out war on individuals and nations. It has terrified many governments of the Muslim countries. He termed his war as a crusade of the "civilized world" against the rest of it and threatened everyone either to support the US or face "devastating consequences".

He spoke like a fanatic, spewing froth and venom, threatening death and destruction. The monster in him told the world that here was a new mass killer emerging, in the true traditions of Truman, the criminal who had ordered the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki; in the true colours of Kennedy and Johnson who had killed millions in Vietnam. In the true colours of George Bush and Clinton who destroyed Iraq and Yugoslavia.

They had killed the people there in the name of defending democracy, American values and freedom. Their new incarnation is launching a war against humanity in the name of stopping "crimes against humanity". He is asking the people of the world to forget the long list of US crimes against other peoples and countries. He wants the world to forget about Hiroshima, Vietnam, Baghdad, Grenada, Nicaragua, Panama, and the Philippine and so on.

The deputy defence secretary, Paul Wolfowitz said, "it is not simply a matter of capturing people… but removing the sanctuaries, removing the support systems, ending states who sponsor terrorism."

Attack on Towers and Pentagon is no Pearl Harbour

The attack on Pearl Harbour was made by one imperialist country against another imperialist one for the purpose of the re-division of the world. Moreover, the US was already looking for an opportunity to enter into World War 2 and the Japanese attack came as a convenient excuse. It was able to hoodwink the American people, who were against the US rulers’ entry into the war, that the US had been attacked first and it was forced to wage a "war of defence". But the September attacks on the Pentagon offices and the World Trade Center were not from a country, let alone an imperialist country. These were not meant to annex any American territory. These were just revenge acts from persons who might have felt the anguish of Palestine, Somalia, Sudan and other nations that have been a constant victim of the horrible deeds of the US imperialists and its die-hard allies. The comparison was just a contrivance to prepare for a marauding attack on Afghanistan in the name of getting the suspect, Osama.

Powel, the notorious killer general of the Gulf War, the man who had served the senior Bush in his barbaric war on Iraq, now Secretary of State for the Bush junior’s administration said, " we will go after that group, that network, and those who have harboured, supported and aided that network, to rip the network up." "When we are through that network, we will continue with a global assault against terrorism in general." He enlisted Kashmir, Northern Ireland, Columbia, and the Basque land in Spain among the next destinations for US action. The US has nefarious plans worldwide to intervene in the movements that are going on in various countries. In the name of fighting terrorism it wants to either destroy the movements or force them to conclusions that are advantageous to the US and the imperialist system as a whole. US foreign policy is in for big changes in the coming times, to secure its top dog position in the New World Order.

Threatening the weak countries of the world

In its so-called war on terrorism the US began with threatening the world with the words "who is not on the side of the US in this war on terrorism is against it".

The White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said on September 18, "In different nations the carrot may be bigger in other nations, the stick may be bigger." The US was ‘ready to reward friends and punish nations that don’t sign up for its fierce war.’

The US particularly threatened Pakistan with dire consequences if it sided with the Taliban. The Pakistani president admitted in his address to the nation, "after 1971 Pakistani nation is facing the severest crisis." He said that the very existence of Pakistan was threatened and he had to choose "the lesser evil". Talking about the predicament he was put in by the United States he told the country that he was "definitively" asked to choose to either be on the side of the US, or its enemies. He was given only one chance to chose from the devil and the deep sea. He was under such intense pressure that at one point he looked as if he would breakdown the next moment.

And the whole world saw a president and a military general in a terrified state in front of the cameras. The US president Bush said that he was happy that Pakistan had chosen to be on the side of the civilized world. He called Pakistan a friend and in the later days all sanctions on Pakistan were lifted for two years as a reward for continuing ‘friendship’ with the US. The threat was open, unambiguous and monstrous.

This is how the leader of the ‘free and democratic world’ secured the support of the countries around Afghanistan and the Middle East! The US attempt to "rally the world" behind its crusade against"terrorism" encompassed bribery and incomparable terror and terrorism.

Eleven countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (friends of the US but afraid of siding with it openly in its present war efforts), from the Middle East were told to side with the US or face the American wrath. All fell in line with or without reservations. Even Tajikistan and Uzbekistan later offered their air bases to the US. Russia had spoken on behalf of Tajikistan that Tajikistan would not be allowed to be used for an attack on Afghanistan. Uzbekistan changed its position three times. First it sided with the US, then opposed it under pressure from Russia and again lay down before US pressures. If denied the use of air bases and land in the countries around Afghanistan the US was ready to attack them and declare them as enemies. And if they obliged, it promised to help them financially.

Bangladesh prostrated without any resistance at all. The Indonesian President Ms. Sukarnoputri, troubled by the movements in Aceh and other provinces of the country, even went to the US to assure Bush of the unreserved Indonesian support (and to be reciprocated). The US especially pressurised the Muslim countries to get behind its war against a Muslim country. This strategy was forced by the circumstances, as the US knew that it might not get the support of the people of many Muslim countries in a war against another Muslim country.

The terror created by the US was so great that many of its longstanding "enemies" expressed sympathy towards it in fright and dread. Libya’s Gaddafi said, "in this hour of tragedy politics should not intervene." This, in fact, was a political statement by him to please the US and keep it off from targeting Libya again. The Islamic republic of Sudan, which was made a target of the US missile attacks in 1998 along with Afghanistan, also did not want to evoke US suspicion and wrath this time. Syria too came up with a statement expressing "shock" and support for the US.

The US extracted support with threats and money. It behaved in the way of a mafia Godfather and betrayed its total hatred for whatever little sovereignty and independence the other countries may have.

To secure the support of the Muslim countries it has pressurised Israel and the Palestinian Authority to come to a cease-fire agreement, as, Israeli terror tactics have been creating problems for the Muslim governments to declare open support for the US’s war plans.

From the third world countries only Iraq condemned the US plan to attack Afghanistan.

The strategic position of Afghanistan

Afghanistan is situated at a strategic point in Asia. It is a corridor between Central Asia and the Middle East. Both of them are rich in natural resources, especially in oil. Afghanistan had remained neutral in the last century till Russia invaded it in 1979. This had come in the wake of the anti-US Islamic revolution in Iran. Through Afghanistan the Russians wanted to reach out to the Indian Ocean as well as secure a corridor to the Persian Gulf in the Middle East. With the overthrow of the Shah the US was deprived of a "strong pivot" for the defence of US interests in the Middle East. While Russia invaded Afghanistan, the US proxy Iraq launched a war against the Islamic Government of Iran.

Though the US was unable to dislodge the Iranian regime, the collapse of the Soviet Union was accompanied by the defeat of the Soviet imperialists in Afghanistan at the hands of the Mujahideen. At the end of the Cold War the US was able to dislodge the Russian imperialists from the Middle East. Central Asia however, continued to be the backyard of Russia even after the breakup of the Soviet Union. With the control of Afghanistan the US intended to clear a way for Central Asia. The Mujahideen had also developed a close relation with the Islamic republic of Iran as Iran continued to help the Mujahideen to prevent it from completely falling into the hands of the US. With Iran standing tall in spite of the US proxy war against it and different warring factions of the Mujahideen unable to provide a stable government in Afghanistan, the US and its Pakistani and Saudi Arabian allies built up the Taliban forces. They hoped that the Taliban would provide a stable government and corridor to Central Asian oil would be established. The Taliban swept away the Mujahideen in a short period of three years. But instead of providing a "stable regime" for the US it embarked on other ambitions.

The religious indoctrination that was imparted to the Taliban forces and for which large-scale money was invested by the Saudi Arabian regime made them hate Western value systems. Osama bin Laden had participated in the war in Afghanistan as a Mujahideen organiser and fund-raiser and had close contacts with the US imperialists and Pakistani and Saudi reactionaries. Tens of thousands of Islamic jehadis from nearly a dozen Muslim countries which the CIA had trained in Pakistan and Afghanistan were not only intended by the US to dislodge its Russian rival from Afghanistan but were also meant to be used to foment religious wars in the Soviet Central Asian Republics. Indoctrinated, ultimately Osama turned into an intense anti-Zionist and US hater and an enemy of the Western way of life. This was particularly after the US war on Iraq. He especially hated the stationing of US forces on the Muslim sacred land of Mecca and Medina and declared his opposition to the US and the Saudi Royal family under whose patronage the US armies had landed on the "Holy Land".

The US’s own Creation Turned Against it

Pakistan had been the main vehicle of US interests in Afghanistan, a joint creator of the Taliban along with the US and Saudi Arabia. They had wanted to replace the Russian evil with their own one. It worked initially. After Russia had been forced to withdraw its armies by the Mujahideen forces Burhannudin Rabbani was made the president. But after a few more years of war the Taliban swept away the Mujahideen forces, captured state power, suppressed non Pushtoon minorities, devastated the areas inhabited by Shia Muslims in Central Afghanistan, liquidated democratic and progressive forces and the remaining Khalqi and Parchamite supporters, enacted laws (or issued edicts) to take Afghan society back into the medieval ages. Then the Taliban boomeranged on America. Instead of becoming a vehicle of the US for influence in Central Asia it thought of carrying out its own religio-political game in the region. Now the US is in confrontation with its own creation.

The Taliban-Pakistan-Saudi nexus continued for many years till the September 11 attacks in the US. Now the Pakistani State has turned into a foe from being a friend of the Taliban. Saudi Arabia had long back disowned Osama. But both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have been collaborating for the Sunni orthodox school to continue in one form or the other. Saudi money continued to find its way to the Taliban, and Saudi Arabia continued its diplomatic relations, though at a low profile, with it. In spite of the US threat it delayed its decision to break diplomatic relations with the Taliban regime while also demanding of the US that it shed its "double standards" in the Middle East. Now, the US has forced both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to help it crush the Taliban. We see a great change in interrelationships of ex-friends and close collaborators.

Afghanistan’s Taliban (and also Saudi Arabia and Pakistan) regime had wanted to advance its orthodox ideology to the whole of Central Asia. From Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to the South Central Russian republics and regions of Daghestan, Chechnya, Ossetia and others, the Taliban sought to influence the movements fighting Russian domination in the region. Yet, in none of these regions were the forces supported by it able to capture state power.

Before the Taliban came into the picture, the US had backed various armies of fundamentalist forces during the fight against the Russians. The US and Saudi Arabia used to funnel more than one billion dollars of military and other aid annually to the Mujahideen forces. These
armies captured power in 1992. These forces continued to fight against each other till the Pakistan based, and Saudi and US assisted, Taliban, wrested control from them in 1996.

Initially, the US played the game to use the Taliban as a springboard for the control of Central Asia. But after Osama made Afghanistan his new sanctuary problems cropped up. Many a times the US and Britain carried out negotiations with the Taliban and offered huge amounts of money to rebuild the war torn country. The US had no objection to Taliban rule and did not help the Northern Alliance in the hope that some day the Taliban would again fall into its lap, and that it would be able to lay an oil pipe line from Turkmenistan to Pakistan through Afghanistan. The US oil giant Unocal had been consistently working for this enterprise to be realised and had influenced US policies towards Afghanistan since the days of the war against the Soviets. But these attempts were called off after the attack on the embassies in Africa, and France stepped in to attempt negotations with the Taliban.. Yet the US efforts continued till as recent as May 2001 when Colin Powell announced a $43 million aid package to the Taliban . The interests of the US, as ever, go far beyond. Getting Osama is only an immediate objective ‘to destroy the obscurantist forces’, though similar forces, entrenched in Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries, do not disturb the US in the least, and it even gives them billions of dollars of sophisticated arms to consolidate their rule.

Russia and Iran have been supporting the Northern Alliance as they are the immediate neighbours and contenders for Central Asian oil and want Taliban out of the way. Now with the onslaught of the US forces, the scene is fast changing.

Greater US Designs Overlap and Threaten Russian Interests

With the blitzkrieg like preparations for war the Northern Alliance started weighing sides and has also declared its support for the US’s war against the Taliban. The Northern alliance wants to have a say in any future set-up that may come up after the war. It wants to thwart the US move to bring back the ex-king Zahir Shah as an exclusive US puppet and would like to bargain over the spoils. It will be a major setback to Russian designs in the region if the Northern Alliance comes to collaborate with the US. Even Iran has been in a dilemma. The Khatmi faction first announced support to American plans, but latter the Iranian government opposed US aggression of Afghanistan. The equations are fast changing in the region. Yet Iran and Russia are interested in the consolidation of the Northern Alliance so that the US is not able to fully control Afghanistan. In the heat of the Central Asian War games the Khatami government of Iran and the Russian government have struck a defence deal that will equip Iran with a huge cache of Russian armaments. The Russians have also increased the arms and ammunition supply to the Northern Alliance. The Russians have even declared that they may join NATO and collaborate with the US to fight terrorism in the world. This is aimed at not leaving the US as the single player in the present crisis in South Central Asia.

When the reports came that the US emissaries had contacted the deposed Afghan King Zahir Shah in Rome and intended to replace the Taliban with a new US stooge in the person of Zahir Shah, Russia feared that the US did not want to stop at getting Osama only. The US plan goes farther than that—to the control of Central Asian Oil. Dismantling the Taliban is the first step to a greater game in Central Asia. So, Russia declared that it would not allow the US to use Central Asian republics for attacking Afghanistan. The signal was clear that if Taliban is to be replaced there is the Northern Alliance to replace it. Moreover, the UN recognises the Afghan government of Rabbani "as the lawful government of Afghanistan" and Northern alliance is officially under its control.

Russia has had to make some very brisk moves in the emerging scenario. Russia had initially said that though it was with the US and supported war against terrorism, it would not be a party to the US efforts. Russia wanted a consensus on how to tackle the problem — a reference to the UN as an umbrella where all the decisions should be taken, and not arbitrarily by the US. It also warned the Central Asian republics neither to allow US forces on their soil nor to let their space facilities for the US Air Force. But when it saw Uzbekistan and Tajikistan and even Kazakhstan ready to "welcome" the US forces it somersaulted and told them to do so and even offered its own air space for US aircraft fighters. When it announced that it would collaborate with the US in the war and might join NATO it again warned the US to stay away from Central Asia. Russia fears as well as opposes the US designs in the region. Through collaboration it wants to stem further US incursions.

"A global assault" is what the US called "a war between the civilised society and the rest of the world." The US declaration whereas amounted to branding the whole of the underdeveloped world as uncivilized and barbarian and declared a "war on all the supporters of terrorism" it also smacked of a larger scheme to control the resources and expand its sphere of influence.

It is here that the voices from Europe started sending dissenting signals.

Dissent in Europe

The US had declared that whosoever was not on the side of the US was against it. And the response of the governments of the world in support of the US was massive. But it proved very short-lived.

After Russia the governments of France, Belgium, Italy and Germany also dissociated themselves from the US war efforts. They were uneasy at the prospect of war fanning out to various Muslim states thus endangering their relationships with these states.

French prime minister Lionel Jospin said that France was a "sovereign country" and had the "right to take independent decisions". He clearly stated that "we are not at war against Islam or the Arab-Muslim world." France especially said that it opposes the war to be taken into Iraq. France has massive economic interests in the Arab World and is set to exploit the opportunities in Iraq. Belgium was the next and Italy the next after. Both said that they were not at war. Italy clarified that "it was not a war between states." Germany preferred a "political solution" to the problem. Even Tony Blair came under attack in his own country for giving all out support to the US. The positions of some of the important EU countries came as a setback to the US plans to take the whole of the "civilized" world along.

On Friday, September 21, the EU meeting especially called for the purpose to decide on the issue, declared unreserved support for the US, but left every country the right to decide on how to help the US’ war on terrorism as most of the countries did not think that it was a war. The EU avoided using the word war as the US and Britain was doing. Here, the US could not threaten anyone, nor issue dictates to this or that country to fall in line.

All this points to a current of uneasiness and dissent about the wider US plans which wants to extend the war against "rouge" states in the Arab world.

The changing tones in Europe also made a mockery of the NATO resolution that had decided under article 5 of the NATO charter that "the war against America was a war against all the countries of NATO". One after the other European nations got skeptical. The US wanted to drag them along in the name of a global war on terrorism. The US thought that it will be able to reestablish its leadership once again on Europe.

Although the European countries have aired their reservations yet all support the US and left the question of physical involvement to be decided at a later date.

Chinese standpoint though supportive of the US yet was halfhearted. China too called for arriving at a consensus [in the UN]. China has its own problems of the Uighur nationality in the Xinjiang region bordering Central Asia but it also fears the increase of US influence in the region.

Fears Delay Blitzkrieg, Diplomacy Picks Up

The US did not start its Blitzkrieg against Afghanistan immediately as it appeared in the early phase of charged atmosphere. First it wanted to use Pakistan as the staging ground for the attack. But when it became apparent that Pakistan may be pushed towards a situation of chaos and civil war that may snowball into a destabilizing process in the whole region and may lead to upsurges in many Muslim countries throughout the world the US and the West as a whole got alarmed.

Many countries of the Middle East, in spite of their subservience to the US, did not approve of the US move. Countries like Egypt and the Gulf Cooperation Council asked the US to stop sponsoring Israeli State terrorism if it really wanted to fight "terrorism". Almost all of the US’s Middle East allies feared backlashes from their own populations if they supported the US without extracting any promises for the Palestinians. Israeli terror tactics and adamancy became a major topic of resentment among the Mid-eastern Muslim countries. The US was asked to shed "double standards" and see the reasons behind the terrorist attacks.

Moreover, the jingoistic mood and utterings of the US rulers sent perplexing signals to its European and NATO allies who were not for disturbing the balance of power in the rest of the world. Russia too got alarmed and started its own preparations to counter the US moves threatening its neighbours and warning the US. All the frontline states around Afghanistan feared sporadic disturbances at home. Pakistan’s precariousness, Iran’s mixed signals and Central Asian republics’ reluctance created problems for embarking on an immediate assault on Afghanistan. Almost all the countries asked for a "convincing" explanation that Osama was involved in the attacks.

All these factors pointed to the fact that the situation was fraught with dangers for the whole region and things were not that easy for the US and any adventure might cause more harm than favour to its interests. Another important factor was that right in the US administration Bush had to encounter disconcerted voices as the plans for an attack got underway. There appeared a conflict over the issue that how far the campaign to counter "terrorism" should go. The inclusion of Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Somalia and even Pakistan as targets came up for discussions.

And on top of all this the Bush’s announcement of a "Crusade" and a war between a Civilized world vs. the Uncivilized sent an unambiguous signal that the present US offensive would be against the whole of the Muslim world and a Clash of Civilizations was coming. This kind of jingoist talk raised eyebrows among allies and adversaries alike. Right from the first day of Bush’s declaration of "revenge", "Infinite Justice", "a Global War against Terrorism" and the "First war of the New Millenium", and the threat of "Who is not on our side is against us" earned the US wide spread criticism. Opposition to the war started building up especially within the US in spite of the Bush’s declaration that Americans should prepare themselves for more "deaths and sacrifices" to defend the ‘American way of life.’

All these things played a role in redrawing the whole US strategy of war and added the aspect of political diplomacy to these efforts. Pakistan had to be left out as a frontline state. Israel was to get the first-ever-serious rebukes for its handling of the situation in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Authority and Sharon government were sternly asked to abide by a cease-fire. Bush had to retract the use of the word "Crusade" and issue statements time and again that his was not a war against the Muslims and the Muslim World and that it was not a clash of civilizations. The revengeful term of "Operation Infinite Justice" had to be replaced with a soft one. And above all, a political campaign had to be launched to rope in the Muslim countries by providing justifications and refraining from open threats. So the delay before the attacks were finally launched. The carrot too was being introduced in Afghanistan in the form of UN (mainly US) food aid, to wean away the population of Afghanistan from the hold of the Taliban. The US has announced $320 million for the Afghan refugees in advance. Frantic efforts were being carried out to pull down the Taliban structure from within.

But all this does not mean that the US will not be driven by its imperialist marauder’s mentality. The stick is always the primary thing when it comes to the defence and furtherance of imperialist interests. Full preperations were made before the final action. Reconnaissance from the ground and space were vigorously going on. The US and British Forces took up positions in the countries surrounding Afghanistan. Sweeping and vicious assaults were planned including the carpet bombing of whole areas and gassing of tunnels, barracks and hilly pathways. No option were being left untouched except the use of nuclear arms.

The deadly snake within the US imperialist monster was writhing cruelly to spit poison, fire and death with its modern war machine and gadgetry. Yet it is afraid of its "enemy", afraid that a backlash may come from some unexpected corner, and also from within its own belly if the war lingers on for a long time. Finally the bombs rained on Afghanistan — day and night.

The "First War of the Millenium" encompasses both dangers and possibilities. The dangers come from the increased fascist rule being introduced throughout the world in the name of fighting terrorism. It also comes from the aggressive war designs of US imperialism and its brutal wars. It also comes from the increasing attacks on the living standards of the people worldwide in the face of a growing recession, which is threatening to take on its worst ever form since world war two. But it also opens up great opportunities of revolutionary advance. Greater fascist repression breeds violent revolt; war and destabalisaion creates great turmoil, leading to massive upheavals; and the excessive impoverisation of the masses fosters discontent and a mass upsurge for change.

In this war-charged environment, wide spread opposition to US imperialism will come up that will bring the proletarian forces in direct interaction with diverse forces who want a world free of imperialist oppression and imperialist mass murder. With what vision and in what direction the people’s resistance and fight develops will be of utmost importance. Either it can be imperialism vs. back to medieval times or, imperialism vs. way forward to socialism and proletarian revolution. We must unite with the people to bring them to the second alternative, which is the only real alternative to imperialist banditry and the politics of mass murder.
